I woke up this morning very sound and refreshed. Then pulled out my AccuCheck meter to test my Fasting Blood Sugar which measured 102.
Then I realized that my father never (in his days) had an opportunity of using AccuCheck. He used litmus paper to test his Urine daily. He also, will drop his urine and see if it will attract ants.
He used to wake me up around 5AM everyday to join him in taking green tea. He lived on restricted diet (even though very stubbornly eating other meals as normal)….I watched him when he had crisis and I felt his pain (though a very strongman at handling pain)
He managed his diabetic condition for almost 30yrs until he had to go for Prostrate Enlargement Operation. Operation was successful but the wound took time to heal. (Diabetes can complicate wound recovery) With prayers and medical help, the wound and suture healed.
But then he later suffered partial stroke…Sometimes we laugh when he attempts to eat and the hand gyrates, he will say to me “Don’t worry, it’s my hand, it will come back by itself” . He recovered from stroke. But some of the medications used in treating him reactivated the Blood Sugar crisis.
And one fateful afternoon, after feeling a little ill, he checked himself into the hospital and at about midnight passed on to eternal rest……November 29th, 2018 marks his 90th posthumous birthday. May his soul continue to rest in peace.
Knowledge base has increased since my father left this world 20yrs ago. Advancement in medical research is transforming society and elongating lives. The only challenge now is awareness.
Diabetes can be managed but we all need to be aware of it and how to prevent or manage it.
